3 great reasons to love books

As I’ve discussed throughout this blog, books are incredible tools we should take advantage of. With so many shows and movies serving as a sort of replacement for them, it’s important to remember why reading is so beneficial not only to our souls, but our brains too!

  1. Reading stimulates our brains. We experience real life activities in books. There’s a really cool study done by Emory University where they got students to all read the same book, and after for several days in a row, they monitored their brain activity. “The neural changes that we found associated with physical sensation and movement systems suggest that reading a novel can transport you into the body of the protagonist,” said Gregory Berns who lead the study. This article can be found here.
  2. Going off of what Mr. Berns said, reading is almost literally an escape! Our minds are transported to another time, another place. This allows us to feel excitement, adventure, or happiness when we need a break from the stress life can bring.
  3.  Reading is actually proven to enhance one’s vocabulary and IQ! So no only is reading fun, but it makes you smarter! Check out Anne E. Cunningham’s paper What Reading Does to the Mind for more info!

With those three awesome reasons, you should be curling up with a book in no time. Remember that it can be hard to find the perfect genre or even book for you. Take some time and check out your local bookstore or library. See what they have to offer and stroll around a bit. You might surprise yourself!

Take this quiz if you’re really really curious, and let me know your results!
